How to Clean and Lubricate Acoustic Drums
A guide to a clean sound.
Acoustic drums benefit from regular care and attention. Dust, dirt, rust and loose or unevenly adjusted parts can affect both the sound and the playing experience. Regular cleaning and maintenance help keep the instrument in good condition for longer.
🧼 Cleaning!
1. Gather your supplies:
Microfibre cloth
Lukewarm water
Wood-safe soap or a mild cleaner suitable for the finish
Screwdriver, if needed to remove hardware
2. Take care of the drumheads:
Do not soak drumheads or wipe them with a wet cloth. Gently remove dust with a dry or, where suitable, barely damp cloth. Excess water can affect the material and its sound.
3. Hoops and shells:
Wipe wooden hoops and shells without soaking them, then dry them immediately with a clean cloth. If you can safely remove the hoops, clean the parts individually.
4. Metal parts:
Wipe stands, screws and hardware with a dry cloth. If rust is present, choose a metal cleaner or treatment suitable for the finish; abrasive methods can damage plated surfaces.
🛢️ How to lubricate moving parts
Apply a small amount of suitable lubricant only to moving metal parts, such as adjustment points or threads, where needed. Avoid excess, which attracts dust.
Do not apply lubricant to drumheads or wooden surfaces.
Finishing touches
After cleaning, reassemble the parts and check the drumhead tension. Play briefly to check the result: a clear, balanced sound is a good sign.
