What Is Ballet? At What Age Can Ballet Training Begin?
Ballet is the art of expressing oneself without words through a dance form with established rules and technique. Its name comes from the Italian “ballo”, associated with dance and movement. In Turkish, a male ballet dancer is called a “balet” and a female dancer a “balerin”.
Ballet is a popular choice among girls and their mothers. As it is a demanding art that takes sustained effort, starting young is encouraged. Activities can begin from age three; these are not full ballet lessons, but playful sessions suited to a child's perception and coordination, designed to build enjoyment and continuity.
For children aged 3–6 in particular, spending an hour away from their parents, socialising, learning to share, recognising their abilities and becoming familiar with classroom rules can play an important part in development.
