What Is a Bass Guitar?

The article traces the bass guitar's beginnings to Fender's Precision Bass in the early 1950s. Compared with a standard electric guitar, it has a deeper sound, thicker strings and greater weight. It generally has frets and four strings, though fretless instruments and versions with up to twelve strings also exist. There are electric and acoustic types.

Standard tuning, from the thickest string to the thinnest, is E, A, D, G. Bass parts are written in the bass clef.

On electric bass, pickups convert string vibrations into electrical signals sent to an amplifier. On acoustic bass, a large hollow body amplifies the strings naturally, as on an acoustic guitar. Bass amplifiers differ from guitar amplifiers and are designed to reproduce low frequencies. Bass can be played with fingers or a pick.
