Types of Drumsticks and How to Choose Them
The implements used to play the drum kit are called drumsticks; the article discusses wooden and metal varieties. They come in many sizes. The familiar 5A and 5B models are often suggested for beginners, alongside types such as 2A, 3A, 7A, 8A and 9A. Sticks differ in weight and length, and even two models with the same designation, such as 5A, may have different weights. The names do not form a simple numerical size sequence. Generally, 7A sticks are shorter, thinner and lighter than 2A, 3A, 5A and 5B sticks, although dimensions vary by manufacturer. There are also signature models, made to the preferences and hand requirements of well-known sponsored drummers; these do not share one standard size.
Drumsticks also differ in their tips. Tips may be nylon or come in oval, ball, barrel, small round and large round shapes. Signature sticks can have other designs: for example, the article describes the tips of Vinnie Colaiuta's signature sticks as V-shaped.
What should we consider when choosing drumsticks?
When choosing drumsticks, first consider the music you want to play. The article recommends heavier, thicker sticks for rock and metal, medium-weight, medium-thickness sticks for pop, funk and R&B, and lighter, thinner sticks for jazz and blues. Choose a stick that gives you the touch you need for your style.
Style is not the only consideration. Keeping the music in mind, find sticks that suit your own hands. The best sticks for you are the ones you feel most comfortable playing with.
