What Is Bona? Can It Help You Read Music Faster?

Bona is the Turkish term for rhythmically speaking note names without singing their pitches. It is a practical foundation for learning notation. Reading a piece this way before performing it helps reduce mistakes. Regular practice makes note recognition faster, strengthens memory and develops a sense of rhythm. How should we practise it?

Start bona practice slowly and pronounce the note names accurately. Keep a steady beat with your hand or a metronome. Once this is comfortable, learn to glance ahead at the next bar while reading the current one. Looking ahead helps prepare the notes that follow and supports fluent reading; experienced readers often anticipate upcoming notes in this way.

In short, regular bona practice supports faster note reading. By speaking the notes in rhythm, we can become more fluent and accurate when reading pieces or singing solfège.
