What to Consider When Buying a Cello

What to Consider When Buying a Cello

Let us briefly consider what determines a cello’s quality and usability. Quality varies with the woods used and depends on the quality of the wood, fittings and craftsmanship. The front is made of spruce; the back, ribs and neck are maple; and the pegs and fingerboard are ebony. Today, different woods are used to make cellos more affordable. Instruments made from compressed wood are also available at lower prices.

If you want to learn as a hobby and are unsure whether you will pursue long-term training, you do not need a top-of-the-range cello. Beginner instruments that will serve you for a long time are available. But if you are committed to playing and have professional ambitions, there are other factors to consider beyond the woods used.

Size is one of the first things to consider when buying a cello. Choosing an instrument proportionate to your physique will make learning much easier. Cellos come in many sizes. Select one that suits your height, finger structure and comfortable playing reach.

Another consideration when buying a cello is the neck. It should not be warped and should allow notes to sound correctly. The bridge should distribute the strings symmetrically between the neck and the lower attachments, centred on the neck. A misplaced bridge can spoil the sound even if the neck is straight, so the setup must be correct. The tuning pegs should allow comfortable tuning. The woods used also affect playing. Typically, the front is spruce; the back, ribs and neck are maple; and the pegs and fingerboard are ebony, though this is not a fixed standard. As with all musical instruments, cello prices vary with quality. There are factory-made and handmade cellos. Factory-made instruments can be suitable for beginners or hobby players and are more affordable. If you intend to play at conservatoire level, you may need a handmade cello.

If you are still unsure about buying a cello, you can ask our school for advice on finding the right instrument. Our teachers will provide information about cellos and help you choose the one that suits you best.
