The Family’s Role in Learning an Instrument
You can help your child learn an instrument without being a musician yourself. What matters is that they know their family supports them. Choose a qualified teacher, then buy an instrument in consultation with that teacher.
Learning an instrument takes discipline and practice. Give your child a quiet place to work and try to prevent interruptions. Listen and offer encouragement. Do not make fun of mistakes or dwell on rough sounds: the early stages of learning can be difficult. Celebrate effort and progress instead of constantly criticising. Remember your own childhood. Read the teacher’s notes in your child’s workbook or sheet music and take an interest in what they are learning. Help them practise regularly and consistently.
Progress comes through regular practice. However talented a child is, improvement requires effort. These steps help you support their instrumental education. Stay beside them on this long journey that calls for patience.
