How and When Did Film Music Begin?
Film music is background music that helps strengthen the dramatic effect of a film. Its duration and character follow the action on screen, and it can work together with sound effects.
The story begins in the era of silent cinema. Live music played an important role: it covered the sound of the projector, drew attention away from visible imperfections and emphasised moments of tension, pain, sadness or joy. Early screenings were accompanied by a pianist or an orchestra playing suitable pieces. Some films also used music composed specifically for them.
The history of film music reaches back to the 1890s. Paris is often cited as an early centre, with piano music composed especially for Émile Reynaud’s animated Pantomimes lumineuses.
Music first accompanied films and animations from outside the film itself, but gradually became part of the film. Today it is an essential element. Some film scores are even valued as works of art in their own right, beyond the films they accompany.
