The Importance of Scale and Arpeggio Exercises

Scale: a group of pitches arranged stepwise according to particular rules, forming the basis of a musical system. Its pitches also determine the paths a melody can take.

Major and minor scales: the scales used within the tonal system.

Arpeggio: a broken chord, in which its notes are played rapidly one after another on string, keyboard or plucked instruments.

The active development of musical and performing skills, a strong individual interpretation, confident communication of a work's content, creativity on stage and preparation for concerts are fundamental keys to professional success.

Alongside finger agility, this work is a major factor in developing coordinated, flexible hands, tonal quality and evenness, clear articulation, expressive playing and legato.

Routine practice of scales, arpeggios, studies and exercises is among the strongest supports for technical progress. Scales should be practised attentively and deliberately to develop technique and overcome difficulties. Learning scales and chords also helps deepen theoretical understanding.

Scale technique includes parallel and contrary motion, evenness of notes, flexible use of the hands and a rich, deep, full sound. To strengthen and develop the fingers, practise scales in particular, as well as arpeggios, chords and exercises or studies containing these techniques, with care.

Regular practice of scales, chords and arpeggios gradually gives the wrists and hands greater mobility, agility and flexibility. The fingertips touch and sense the instrument more sensitively, tone quality improves and finger speed develops rapidly.

Scales and arpeggios occupy a very important place among technical exercises. A student who practises them regularly can solve a passage built from scale arpeggios more easily and quickly than a student who never practises scales.

Scales help train, discipline and control the fingers. They also develop instrumental skills such as tone quality, evenness, variety of timbre and speed.

When playing scales, pay attention to accurate articulation, techniques such as legato and non-legato, choosing a tempo in advance, feeling the scale's energy and establishing a rhythmic pulse.
