The Barre Technique on Guitar
A barre is a technique in which one finger presses more than one string at the same time. It may cover two strings or as many as six. Many beginning guitarists find it daunting, but knowing how to practise and being patient can make it manageable.
Before learning barre chords, practise playing the basic chords clearly. A barre needs coordination and developing finger strength as well as technique, and it is usually made with the index finger. It may feel demanding at first, but becomes easier as control improves. Here are some tips to help you practise.
Keep the index finger fairly straight when forming a barre. Place it close to the fret wire on the side towards the guitar’s sound hole. Starting around the fifth or seventh fret can be easier because the frets are closer together there. Your notes may not sound clear at first; this is a normal stage of learning. With steady practice, the sound should gradually become clearer and stronger.
