Which Music School Should I Attend?

An educational building behind a green space

Music occupies an important place in human life: an aesthetic expression of feelings and thoughts through organised sound. Since the philosophers of antiquity, it has served not only as an art but also as an educational tool, playing a fundamental role in physical and spiritual development. Today it is therefore useful to approach music education from three perspectives:

• General music education: music taught in primary and secondary schools throughout formal education.

• Recreational music education: courses for amateur music enthusiasts offered by private institutions, tuition centres, public education centres and municipalities.

• Vocational or professional music education: training for musically talented people who choose music as a career.

Institutions providing professional music education in Türkiye can be considered at primary, secondary and higher-education levels:

At primary-school level, through an aptitude test:

State conservatoires across Türkiye offer part-time or full-time programmes from the third year of primary school;

Bilkent University's Music Preparatory and Ballet Primary School admits pupils from the first grade.

At secondary-school level, through an aptitude test:

Music departments of public and private Fine Arts and Sports High Schools;

Military Music School (Military Band School): provides training in military music and band performance.

At higher-education level, through an aptitude test:

Music education departments within the education faculties of state and foundation universities;

State conservatoires, with primary, secondary, undergraduate and part-time programmes;

Music departments within fine arts faculties;

State conservatoires of Turkish music;

Faculties of Fine Arts and Design;

Music research centres, providing training in music research;

These departments provide specialist training in areas such as performance, composition, instrument making and repair, and music research. In addition to the departments listed above, other distinctive routes include:

• Music and Performing Arts faculties at Bilkent University and Ordu University;

• The Music Department within Istanbul Bilgi University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences;

• Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts completes these three different departmental routes.

When considering each type of school and the level and nature of its teaching, take your own interests and abilities into account. You may be too old or not yet old enough for some institutions. Most importantly, a qualified professional with vocational music training should assess your aptitude and help identify the most suitable school. If you want professional music education, begin by getting to know music schools around you. Music departments now exist in almost every province. Each summer, talented applicants are admitted through special aptitude tests. I hope music remains part of your life, whether through general education or a professional career.
