What Is a Capo?
“Capo” means “head” in Italian. Also known as a clamp, it is a common guitar accessory. Designs vary, but generally include a rubber-covered bar across the strings, a rear support and a clamp secured by a clip or screw.
A capo presses the guitar strings against a fret as a finger would. Fitting it effectively moves the nut to that position, changing the pitch while allowing familiar chord shapes. Beginners who know basic chords can place it to suit their voice and sing while playing more easily.
A capo makes playing easier, but I do not think relying on it too much is helpful. Learn difficult chords too, so your fingers gain reach and strength. Without developing these skills, you may remain dependent on the capo.
