How Can I Make My Violin Quieter?

Regular, disciplined practice is the first requirement for becoming a good violinist. If you live in a dormitory or do not want to disturb neighbours, a mute may help. What is a violin mute?

Mutes reduce vibration at the bridge when the bow moves over the strings, making the sound quieter. The tone may sound different. A properly fitted mute should not damage the violin, but do not press too hard on the bridge when attaching it, as the bridge could break. A few other options are also described below.

The article also suggests attaching clothes pegs to the bridge to reduce the sound. Always practising with a mute is not ideal. It becomes harder to notice nuances and apply the bowing techniques a piece requires. Metal, plastic and similar violin mutes are available in music shops.
