How Can I Reduce Violin Bow Shaking?

You have started learning the violin and are practising bow strokes, but your arm shakes involuntarily and the sound is unsteady. This does not necessarily mean the instrument is faulty; beginners often encounter this problem. A common cause lies in the bowing technique of the right arm.

First, check the tension of the bow hair and the amount of rosin. If these are right, hold the bow as your teacher has shown you and place it on the string. The key is to let the bow rest with its own weight. Excessive gripping is a common cause of shaking. Think of a child learning to hold a pencil: squeezing too hard quickly tires the fingers. A light fingertip hold is enough. The same principle applies to a violin bow; you can even begin practising the hold with a pencil.

Bow shaking often improves with practice. Keep the right arm relaxed from the shoulder to the fingertips, and develop that ease through regular, attentive bowing practice.
