Why Choosing the Right Violin Bow Matters

A bow’s weight matters: it should feel neither tiringly heavy nor difficult to control because it is too light. It should support smooth string crossings without unwanted shaking or bouncing. Balance matters as much as total weight. Some players may feel more comfortable with a balance point nearer the frog than the tip, but the right choice is individual. Inspect the wooden stick as well: its curve should remain directed towards the hair, without sideways warping. A visibly distorted stick may make control and sound production difficult. The hair should also form an even ribbon without large gaps. Individual hairs will wear and break with use, but substantial unevenness may call for rehairing. Considering weight, balance, stick condition and hair helps you choose a suitable bow. Even a good violin cannot give its best if the bow is poorly suited to the player.
