How Should You Care for and Protect a Violin?
Many violinists wonder how to clean their instrument without damaging its varnish. After each practice session, remove rosin dust with a soft, dry, alcohol-free cloth, such as a suitable microfibre cloth. The wooden bow stick can be wiped in the same way. If residue has built up, the article suggests a purpose-made violin cleaner applied sparingly to cotton; the product must be suitable for the instrument’s varnish. For internal maintenance or uncertain deposits, consult a luthier.
After cleaning, consider how to protect the violin. It may attract the curiosity of friends and family, but it should always be handled gently: its structure is delicate. Keep it away from damp conditions and extremes of heat or cold to help preserve its setup, and always transport it in its case.
