Vocal Training for Students Preparing for Music Programmes

In earlier articles, I provided theoretical information about vocal training. Let us begin here with the differences in teaching between students learning as a hobby and those intending to make singing part of their professional lives.

The essential skills to be acquired in recreational and professional singing lessons are the same. Diaphragmatic breathing and vocal warm-ups are fundamental to both. Vocal training develops correct use of the voice, awareness of pitch and conscious vocal technique. For students pursuing professional education or preparing for a musical career, however, the process is more detailed.

The singing component of an aptitude test has particular expectations, which form its assessment criteria. Let us briefly examine the elements you need to understand and apply during preparation.

Correct breathing: you are expected to use diaphragmatic techniques and observe the marked breathing points without breaking the melody's continuity.

Key and pitch awareness: you are expected to carry the melody in the correct key. Developing this awareness helps eliminate singing flat or sharp.

Intonation: accurate pitch production. You are expected to sing every note in the key at its correct frequency.

Mouth position: you are expected to apply the vocal technique required in voice exercises and all other situations involving the use of your voice.

Articulation: you are expected to form words, syllables, vowels and consonants correctly. Articulation is essential to communicating the work accurately and effectively.

Interpretation: you are expected to use appropriate vocal inflection and emphasis to strengthen the work's meaning and convey emotion. Breathing at the right points and observing the score's nuances also shape the interpretation.

Finally, I would like to discuss repertoire selection. Aptitude tests require works suited to classical vocal technique rather than current popular songs, so you should choose your pieces with a teacher. Your vocal range may not allow you to perform every piece in the singing repertoire, making guidance essential. I strongly recommend visiting our school for more detailed advice on a sound training programme for this journey.
