How Should Music Be Taught?

Teaching requires a love of the work. Teachers gain satisfaction as their students progress, and their own approach helps make that progress possible. Dedicated, well-trained teachers can achieve remarkable results in music and other subjects. Music education should therefore draw on accumulated knowledge and techniques to create an individual programme. Lessons cannot simply follow a memorised formula: methods should respond to the learner, and the programme should be reviewed regularly.

Music education is a cumulative process in which skills build on one another, so a fixed duration cannot suit everyone. A general instrumental curriculum can be set, but it is natural for students to complete it at different speeds. People differ in perception, aptitude and discipline, and the time required varies accordingly. Check that your chosen provider meets educational standards and that its teachers have suitable qualifications. A ministry-approved institution offers a formal framework, but it is still worth discussing its teaching approach.
