Why Listening Matters to Music Lovers

Hands raised towards the stage at a concert

For people who make music and experience life through sound, listening is an essential activity alongside technical practice. Hearing worthwhile music across different genres builds familiarity with melody and rhythm and can support both aural skills and improvisation. Just as athletes train, painters observe and actors study characters, musicians need to listen. The breadth and quality of that listening also matter.

We all know the saying “Music is food for the soul.” The author draws a parallel with the food we eat: just as a nourishing diet supports the body, worthwhile music can enrich our inner life. From this perspective, listeners should seek works with depth, rich harmony and an established place in their genre. The article favours such listening over repetitive, harmonically simple popular music; this is an artistic preference rather than a claim that a genre is medically harmful.
