What Is a Rest in Music?

A golden treble clef in front of musical notation

When singing, playing an instrument or reading music, we follow note durations within a rhythmic framework. This rhythm also includes places where we remain silent.

What is a rest, and how is it observed?

A rest, also called “es” in Turkish, means remaining silent for its indicated number of beats. A metronome helps you keep the correct duration. For example, set it to 50 and count each click as one beat: two clicks equal two beats, three equal three and four equal four. The metronome is an effective way to understand the pulse.

The rest symbols are shown below in order.

- A whole rest lasts four beats.

- A half rest lasts two beats.

- A quarter rest lasts one beat.

- An eighth rest lasts half a beat.

- A sixteenth rest lasts a quarter of a beat.
