Musical Clefs
A staff needs a clef to identify its notes correctly. For example, the name of a note on the second line changes depending on the clef.
Four clefs are discussed here, as follows.
G clef: most commonly placed on the second line; another form is placed on the first line.
F clef: most commonly placed on the fourth line; another form is placed on the third line.
Alto C clef: centred on the third line.
Tenor C clef: centred on the fourth line. The C clef differs from the other clefs in its placement; forms of it may appear on the first, second, fourth and fifth lines.
As the diagrams show, each clef gives the notes a different position on the staff.
