Why Is Learning to Read Music Important?
You have decided to study music, whether an instrument or singing. Whichever field you choose, there are basic skills to acquire. Just as solving a maths problem without knowing the formula takes longer, learning an instrument without notation can be slow and less lasting. Learning from videos or by ear is possible, but it requires strong melodic memory and a good aural foundation. If you do not yet have these, learning to read music is especially useful.
Reading music supports long-term learning. You can return to a piece years later and use its score to play it again. A piece learnt only by memory may fade with time. Notation is therefore an important tool for lasting progress.
