Is Everyone Who Can Draw Artistically Gifted?

This frequently asked question reflects a common misconception. It can discourage people and diminish their interest in drawing before they have even begun.

So, is everyone who can draw artistically gifted? In the distinction made here, the answer is no.

Making this distinction matters. Following a sound approach can still lead to a finished work. Determined practice, suitable methods and techniques, and good coordination between eye, hand and mind can bring a learner to a useful level of drawing ability. More simply, a person can learn to depict visible objects, figures, spaces, colours and perspective.

In the author’s view, artistic talent becomes apparent when someone depicts what is not directly visible. A person may draw everything on a table, but imagining and drawing what is underneath asks for something more. Mental imagery is important here: it brings creativity into play, which is then developed into a personal style. This is why the terms someone who draws, painter and artist do not necessarily mean the same thing.
