What Is the Aim of Vocal Training?

Singing lessons are often thought to be simply about singing songs. Their main aim, however, is to develop effective breathing and sound vocal technique.

What is effective breathing, and how do we learn it?

There is more than one way to breathe, and each produces different results. Singing training begins with learning to breathe with diaphragmatic support. Early breathing exercises help you notice the difference from your previous habits. As this develops, vocal exercises accompanied by piano are introduced. Combined with breath support, they aim to establish accurate pitch and warm up the voice appropriately. After regular, correct practice, songs can be selected and you can observe how these exercises support your singing. (Ayşe Meral Töreyin, 1998)
