What Is a Ukulele?
The ukulele, often described as a small guitar, is a four-stringed instrument associated with Hawaiian music. Its name is commonly shortened to uke and is usually translated from Hawaiian as “jumping flea”.
The four common sizes are soprano, concert, tenor and baritone. The ukulele is often used for rhythmic accompaniment. Tunings vary, but soprano, concert and tenor instruments commonly use A–E–C–G when listed from the lower physical string to the upper one. The article’s price range of 150–1,000 ₺ is historical and should not be read as a current quotation.
Many people know the ukulele from Hawaiian musician Israel Kamakawiwoʻole’s version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. Paul McCartney of the Beatles has also played it in concerts. More recently, LP’s “Lost on You” brought the instrument to the attention of further listeners, as described in this article.
If you would like to learn the ukulele, a recognised music school can help. Guitarists who already understand rhythm and chords may find the transition relatively easy. If you have not heard much ukulele music, the well-known tracks listed below offer a starting point for exploring its sound.
