What Is Bowing, and What Should You Pay Attention To?
The first challenges of playing the violin are holding the instrument and using the bow. Bowing is the technique of drawing a clear, smooth tone from the violin. The article suggests spending around two months on bow exercises at the start of your studies, although your teacher may shorten or extend this period. What should you pay attention to when bowing?
First, establish a comfortable, correct violin hold. Begin bowing in the middle of the bow, using smooth, unaccented strokes and pausing on the string between them. Then explore the lower half, upper half and whole bow. Once the sound is clear, repeat without stopping before adding rhythmic patterns. Learn the note values and keep a steady pulse. Coordinate the time available with the bow speed, aiming for an even sound throughout the bow. A relaxed transfer of the arm’s weight can help produce a fuller tone.
Basic bowing techniques:
LEGATO:
Play the notes smoothly connected within the same bow stroke, continuing in one direction.DÉTACHÉ:
Play each note with a separate, even bow stroke while keeping the bow on the string.STACCATO:
Separate the notes crisply while keeping the bow on the string.SPICCATO:
Let the bow bounce lightly in small, curved movements.SAUTILLÉ:
Use the bow’s natural spring to produce a series of light, separate bouncing strokes.RICOCHET:
A controlled accented release lets the bow rebound, producing several separate notes in one bow direction.
