University musicology programmes
What is musicology?
Musicology is the scholarly study of music. The Turkish term “müzikoloji” comes through the French “musicologie”; the article gives the Turkish Language Association's equivalent as “müzik bilimi”, the study or science of music.
What is the purpose of musicology departments?
Musicology departments within fine arts faculties or conservatoires aim to train researchers who understand music academically, think critically and write about musical topics. The studies can prepare students for research, publication, consultancy and criticism, depending on their specialisation and further experience.
Musicology programmes study music academically and may combine theory, harmony, form, aural skills, musical cultures, instrumental study and chamber music. The Turkish programmes described in this 2017 article are four-year bachelor's degrees. Programme structure and duration should be checked with the university concerned.
Is an aptitude examination required?
The programmes described in this 2017 article admitted students through aptitude examinations, often held in summer. Admissions routes and dates can change and differ by university; consult the current official programme announcement.
Which subjects might I study at university?
Music subjects may include Introduction to Musicology, Individual Instrument Study, Aural Skills and Music Literacy, Basic Piano, Music History, Analysis, Foundations of Music Education, Turkish Folk Music, Turkish Art Music, Music Ethics, World Music Cultures and Organology. Curricula and course content differ between universities; this is an illustrative list from the article.
Common compulsory subjects listed in the article: Atatürk's Principles and History of the Turkish Revolution, English, and Turkish Language and Literature.
What can I do after graduating?
Possible areas of work include radio and television, journalism, music libraries, collecting and documenting musical traditions, cultural research and private music education. Opportunities depend on qualifications, experience and the requirements of each role.
How can I continue studying after a bachelor's degree?
Graduates may apply for relevant master's programmes in music, education, social sciences, fine arts or conservatoire studies, as well as suitable related fields. Entry requirements, examinations and eligibility depend on the programme and its current rules.
