Can You Play Acoustic Guitar Without a Pick?

Can You Play Acoustic Guitar Without a Pick?

Steel-string instruments such as electric, acoustic and twelve-string guitars are commonly played with a plastic pick; bass guitars are considered separately here. Nylon-string classical guitars are usually played with the fingers. Their thicker strings and wider spacing make it easier to pluck individual strings. On these guitars, the sound of a pick rubbing against the strings can be distracting.

Acoustic and electric guitars generally have thin steel strings and closer string spacing. They lend themselves to playing with a pick, which can produce a strong, clear sound. The article favours a pick for this purpose, although the volume and tone of fingerstyle playing also depend on the player’s technique.

You may have noticed that I keep saying “generally”. Music is a free art, and there are exceptions to every rule.

Many excellent musicians play steel-string guitars with their fingers or classical guitars with a pick. What matters is knowing your instrument and practising thoroughly.

Although there are exceptions, beginners who have not yet settled into a technique should follow their teacher’s guidance and use the approach best suited to their learning.
