Atatürk’s Reforms in Music
Atatürk took a leading role in reform and progress, including the establishment of new musical institutions. During this period, the musical resources inherited from the Ottoman era were improved and modernised. Institutions that had closed were replaced by new ones intended to meet contemporary standards while supporting a national musical culture.
Some of the musical initiatives undertaken under Atatürk’s leadership were:
* The Music Teachers’ School, Musiki Muallim Mektebi, opened in Ankara in 1924.
* The Imperial Band, Mızıka-i Hümayun, moved to Ankara and was renamed Riyaset-i Musiki Heyeti (Presidential Music Ensemble) in 1924.
* Istanbul Municipal Conservatory was founded in 1926.
* Ankara State Conservatory was founded in 1936.
* The music department of the Gazi Teacher Training Institute was established in 1937.
* The Military Music School opened in Ankara in 1938.
These institutions continued to develop in line with Atatürk’s ideas and direction. They form part of the foundations of modern Turkish music and have been joined by symphony orchestras, conservatories, university music departments, opera companies, faculties of fine arts and fine arts high schools.
