Advice for Anyone Who Wants to Learn an Instrument
There is no fixed upper age limit for learning an instrument. Whatever your age, determination and regular practice matter more than thoughts such as “I’m too late” or “I won’t manage it”. Once you decide to begin, look for an experienced teacher or music school. Discuss the instrument, musical style and learning programme before making your choice.
Instruments come in different sizes and designs, and established technical habits can be difficult to change. Choosing without guidance may leave you with an unsuitable or poor-quality instrument and discourage you before you begin. The author also cautions against relying only on online videos: without feedback, you may adopt awkward posture, learn unsuitable techniques or attempt material beyond your current level.
A suitable teacher, instrument and programme, together with regular practice, can help you make meaningful progress over a year. The pace depends on your starting point and goals. When researching a music school, consider:
• Approval by the Ministry of National Education
• Availability of certificates
• Teaching staff and continuity of teaching
• Facilities and learning environment
