What playing the guitar can bring to our lives

For me, engaging with art is one of the important ways we express our humanity: we act through both thought and feeling. Learning an instrument can bring many benefits. In this article, I will discuss some of the qualities that guitar playing can help us develop.

1. It engages the mind.

Instrument playing coordinates hearing, touch, vision and movement. The article refers generally to research on several brain regions working together, but provides no specific study citation for that claim.

2. It practises concentration.

Because guitar playing requires concentration, it can help some people focus their thoughts and feel calmer.

3. It develops manual skills.

Regular guitar practice develops the motor skills and two-hand coordination used in playing.

4. It encourages teamwork.

Making music together requires a shared sense of time. Pulse and timing are fundamental to music, and musicians need to coordinate around a common tempo to perform together.

5. It practises planning and decision-making.

The guitar can be approached both along the strings and across them. Many notes occur in more than one position, allowing melodies and chords to be played with different fingerings. Choosing among those options gives the player practice in planning and decision-making.

6. It offers opportunities to socialise.

Music brings people together in many shared activities. It can help us connect with people we have never met, even when we do not share a spoken language, creating opportunities for social exchange.

7. It can build confidence.

Sharing musical skills with an audience can gradually build confidence and the ability to express oneself in public.

Playing the guitar can enrich our lives in many ways.
