Why Does My Guitar Buzz?

A person sitting and playing classical guitar

The guitar is a delicate instrument. This month’s article looks at a common problem: unwanted buzzing.

Guitar buzz can arise from technique or from the instrument itself. Begin by checking how you play: sit comfortably upright and use a sound hand position. Place the fingers close to the fret wire towards the guitar body, with enough pressure to stop the string cleanly and without touching neighbouring strings unintentionally. If the instrument is properly set up, this should help produce a clear note.

The other possible source is the guitar’s condition and setup. Neglect or rough handling can affect the instrument over time. Changes in the neck can alter string height, making playing harder or causing strings to contact the frets and buzz. If the problem is mechanical, pressing harder will not solve it; even an open string may buzz. Worn strings can also contribute. A suitable setup and regular maintenance help identify the cause.

For a clear guitar sound, choose a well-functioning instrument, maintain it and handle it gently. Replace worn strings and practise with sound technique. These steps help you identify and reduce unwanted buzzing.
