Your First Experience of Art

A first experience of drawing begins with interest. It may look easy, but learning is demanding. Moving from simple to difficult applies here too. Do not start with portraits or jump straight into colour: without a foundation, this can lead to confusion and weak work. Drawing is the basis of painting, and we need to understand it before progressing.

In its simplest sense, drawing is line or a picture made with lines. A drawing defines the form, shape and, in a sense, boundaries of an object or living thing. It is the linear aspect of a picture.

Start with prisms and everyday objects to develop motor skills, learn a correct pencil grip and establish sound drawing technique. Once this foundation is in place, you will have experienced drawing and can explore the principles of the work in your chosen direction.
