How Are Human Voices Classified?

Before discussing voice categories, it helps to define sound: vibrations that our hearing can detect. The human voice is a central means of communication. In the traditional classification used here, voices are first grouped as female, male and children’s voices. Before puberty, children’s voices are less clearly differentiated by sex. During puberty, voices develop their adult characteristics, with a particularly marked lowering of pitch in boys.

Classifying female and male voices requires care and informed assessment. People without vocal training may not yet know their range and timbre, so a voice category cannot be assigned reliably at first glance. As training progresses, these characteristics become clearer. The traditional classification described here divides female and male voices into three categories each.

Female Voices

– Soprano: the highest female voice category.

– Mezzo-soprano: a middle-range female voice.

– Alto: a low female voice.

Male Voices

– Tenor: the highest of the three male voice categories listed here.

– Baritone: a middle-range male voice.

– Bass: the lowest male voice category.
