How to tune a violin

How do you tune a violin? What is tuning? Tuning means adjusting an instrument so that it produces the correct pitches. On a violin, this is done by tightening or loosening the strings with the tuning pegs. The fine tuners allow smaller adjustments.

Tuning should not be confused with a chord. A chord consists of at least three notes sounding together; tuning means adjusting an instrument to produce the correct pitches. Playing an out-of-tune instrument can accustom your ear to incorrect notes. Always check the violin's tuning before you start playing.

How Do You Tune a Violin?

When starting out, it is safer to tune your violin with help from someone experienced. From thickest to thinnest, the strings are G, D, A and E, also called Sol, Re, La and Mi. You can use a tuner, a piano or another accurately tuned instrument. If using a tuner, you need to know the letter names of the notes.

Do — C

Re — D

Mi — E

Fa — F

Sol — G

La — A

Si — B

Place the tuner where it can pick up the violin clearly. Start by bowing the thinnest string, E. When it is correctly tuned, the display should show E. If another letter appears, tighten or loosen the string as appropriate. Use the sequence of note letters below as a guide. If the tuner shows F instead of E, the pitch is above the target and the string needs loosening. If it shows D instead of E, tighten the string.

A – B – C – D – E – F – G / A – B – C – D – E – F – G – A

After tuning the E string, tune the next string, A, so the display shows A. Again, use the note-letter sequence to tighten or loosen each string correctly. Next tune the D string to D, and finally the thickest, G string to G.

To tune from a piano or another instrument, play the required reference notes and match them by ear. If you are not confident in your hearing or do not know where the notes are on the reference instrument, using a tuner is the more reliable option.
