How Should You Begin Learning the Violin?
Violin teaching usually begins in first position. This hand position is straightforward to locate, learn and monitor by ear, making it well suited to establishing and practising basic violin technique.
First position makes it easier to monitor posture, instrument hold and intonation, while developing bow control and left-hand finger technique.
In first position, the left hand should not squeeze the neck. The fingers remain relaxed and curved, approaching the strings upright and freely. Coordination between the hands is also easier to establish as the learner works towards accurate, clear and satisfying tones.
Violin teaching often starts on the A or D string. In first position, their notes sit in a range that learners can readily hear and distinguish. They also offer a manageable starting point for fingertip placement and bowing. Their intermediate thickness can make them more comfortable for a beginner’s fingers than the outer strings.
Of the D and A strings, the author favours A for a first introduction, because it allows the right arm’s natural weight to pass readily through the bow to the string.
Taken together, these considerations lead the author to recommend starting violin lessons in first position on the A string.
