How Can I Reduce Violin Bow Shaking?
You have started learning the violin and, like other beginners, are practising bow strokes in your first lessons. But your arm shakes involuntarily, producing an unsteady sound. There is no need to assume that your violin is faulty: other beginners often experience the same difficulty. A common cause of the unsteady bow sound lies in the right arm’s technique.
First, check the bow-hair tension and the amount of rosin. Then hold the bow as instructed and place it on the string, allowing its own weight to rest there without adding unnecessary pressure. Gripping too tightly is a common cause of shaking. Children learning to write sometimes squeeze a pencil so hard that their fingers hurt and tire quickly, although a light fingertip hold would be enough. The same principle applies to the violin bow; a pencil can even be used to practise the initial hold.
Bow shaking can improve with practice. Pay particular attention to keeping the right arm relaxed from shoulder to fingertips, and develop this habit through regular bowing exercises.
