What Is a Choir?
My previous article introduced different types of choir and offered a simple definition. But gathering singers and balancing their numbers and voices is not enough on its own. This article explains other elements needed to form a choir.
In my previous article, I described a choir simply as people who come together to sing. More fully, it is an ensemble balanced in numbers, voice types, vocal capabilities and timbre, organised to perform and interpret unison or polyphonic music. Through its work, it contributes to cultural and artistic life. Here, ensemble means a coordinated group rather than just a crowd. A group needs certain shared characteristics to function.
1. At least two people: the singers.
2. Communication between members.
3. Each member contributes towards a shared goal.
4. Agreement on how to reach those goals.
5. A shared approach to working together.
6. Acceptance of the person leading the group. Choir members do not necessarily elect the conductor, but they can choose to join a choir whose conductor they enjoy working with.
