How Should Preschool Children Be Taught Piano?

Piano learning can support children's musical and broader development, and the quality of teaching matters. Teachers need pedagogical knowledge and experience. An unsuitable approach can discourage a child from the instrument or from lessons, so a thoughtful, supportive relationship is important.

A teacher's approach can include the following:

• Avoid unnecessary difficulty; the aim is to teach piano while nurturing enjoyment of it.

• First, get to know the student well.

• Be warm and caring in lessons.

• Speak clearly and understandably.

• Use language suited to the child's level rather than speaking as you would to an adult.

• Keep the child's attention engaged throughout the lesson.

• Identify the child's interest and pace of learning.

• If a difficulty arises, simplify it and explain again with visual support.

• Model movements to help with difficulties involving the right and left hands.

• Introduce note reading through simplified or concrete, visual methods.

• Choose methods suited to the student's level.

From my observations, learners within the same age group can differ considerably. Teaching should therefore adapt to the individual rather than follow one fixed standard for everyone.

Beginner piano materials should be simple and understandable so that learning does not become unnecessarily difficult. Suitable methods improve the quality and usefulness of lessons. For young children, coloured notes, pictures that match the song and lyrics presented as stories can make learning engaging and memorable. Choose materials that support this concrete, playful approach.

Examples of methods to consider for preschool learners include:

• Sevinç Ereren's Kolay Piyano

• Fritz Emonts' European Piano Method

• John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course

• Denes Agay's Learning to Play Piano

• Didem Gezek and Elvan Gezek's Piyano Çalmayı Öğreniyorum

• Yalçın İman's On Yaş Altı Çocuklar İçin Piyano Metodu

• Ümit Sürekli's Arkadaşım Piyano is another option.
