What Does Style Mean in Painting?
Style is an artist's individual approach to creating. It depends on artistic philosophy, the art form and its techniques, and the artist's personal abilities. It is an aesthetic value shaped by the ability to unite meaning with what can be perceived, and by the expressive unity of content and form.
Among the basic qualities of style is continuity: an artist's works should carry a recognisable sense of identity. The parts of an individual work should form a coherent whole. Works should also be clear and comprehensible rather than crude. Harmony and suitability between the art form, materials and content should come together.
