What Is Relative Pitch?

Relative pitch uses a reference note to identify other pitches. It can be understood as accurately hearing and reproducing the distance between notes, a skill developed over time through substantial training and effort.

Unlike absolute pitch, relative pitch is based on learning and training. It can be developed later and relies on identifying pitches in relation to one another. Most professional musicians have this ability.

Relative-pitch training aims to understand the attractions and movements between notes within a tonal structure. Music theory and melodic analysis help refine hearing, much as dedicated practice develops instrumental virtuosity.

Just as instrumentalists develop their playing through sustained practice, relative pitch can be refined through effort and training.
