A Brief History of Symphony Orchestras
The symphony orchestra developed over centuries, drawing on opera ensembles and church music groups. Between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries, these groups were smaller and varied in their makeup. From the mid-eighteenth century, the growth of the symphony and instrumental concert music encouraged composers to explore a wider range of timbres and orchestral expression. Development followed two broad paths: adding instruments to the ensemble and making fuller use of its existing resources, clarifying instrumental colours and musical textures.
Conducting, which helps convey the character of an orchestral work, has a long history. In antiquity and the Middle Ages, musical groups were often directed through hand and finger movements. As polyphony grew more complex and instruments developed, clearer beat indications became necessary, including beating time, or battuta. With the growth of symphonic music, directing became a separate role requiring full attention. Where the principal violinist had once played and led with the bow, a dedicated conductor increasingly took over, using a baton.
