Can Adults Do Ballet?

Successive images of ballet movements against a dark background

A professional ballet career usually begins with training at a young age, but adults can also enjoy ballet as a hobby. Beginner adult classes do not require previous dance experience. You need not rule it out simply because you feel too old or are concerned about your weight.

Ballet can appeal to people of many ages who want time for themselves, a break from work or study, and an enjoyable way to develop fitness and movement skills.

Ballet works towards coordinated dance movements rather than isolating a single muscle. A step may involve the trunk, legs and arms together, with controlled posture maintained throughout. Adult ballet classes can include stretching and basic barre work, helping participants develop coordination and body awareness.

Adult ballet can develop body awareness, flexibility and strength; encourage creativity and confidence; offer mental and physical relaxation; and provide experience of performance and the stage. These skills can also support confidence in everyday and working life.
